Eucomis ‘Tugela Jade’ Pineapple Lily — 2 Bulbs

$18.00

A tough, vigorous perennial bulb for the garden, for containers and to cut to bring inside.

Like its namesake, the wild and wide Tugela River in South Africa, this perennial multiplies, getting bigger with time and it needs to be a part of a mixed garden. By that, I mean it’s big and a bit floppy.

We grow some in full sun and others in part shade last summer, in containers. The wide, apple-green leaves looked handsome April, May, and June. Then, long, creamy green flowers emerge. They last, and last and last.  In reality, the individual flowers fade but the stalk keeps its color and form into August.

  • contrast the strappy, amaryllis-like leaves with narrow sedges, round nasturtium, or with silver sage.
  • mix in other strappy leaves like daylily or agapanthus for flower contrast
  • big drama in the searing heat July. Flowers look like skinny, skeletal pineapples, over 2 feet, holding themselves tall and beautiful.

And they make an extraordinarily long-lasting cut flower. In fact, most of the new cultivars like this have been developed for the cut flower industry.  Soon, you’ll see them in shops and florists.    2 bulbs per order. Ships in May.
