Butcher’s Broom

The weird fact is that this chest tall, woody shrub, that thrives on neglect, dry soil, and shade,  is a lily. Yep, it’s in the family but only botanists can see the similarity.   Butcher’s Broom, Ruscus aculeatus, adds great texture to the garden, and bright red berries at Christmas.  Here’s how tough it is: once when I moved into an abandoned house, I chopped down massive yaupon hollies that were scraping the roof shingles off. I pulled a blanket of vines away, to reveal a row of healthy, ready for their close up Butcher’s Broom!   See pic of our shipping size.
