Cold Hardy Collection – 3 Best for Zone 6

Based on our customer’s experience and our travels, we know these three do great in cold climates. But be aware that crinums haven’t been grown in cold places for many years so you are experimenting!

  1. Crinum bulbispermum,  aka Orange River Lily.  We’ve sent plants to Saint Louis Zoo, and Denver Botanical Garden, and we’ve seen it thriving in Copenhagen Denmark!
  2. Crinum ‘Cecil Houdyshel’. We’ve sent plants to Pittsburgh Zoo, to Martha’s Vineyard, and very high elevations in West Virginia.  This one flowers more than any other.
  3. Crinum moorei album. We’ve seen it planted in gray and chilly England and even Scottland!

Orange River Lily

Incredibly cold hardy! We have clients growing these in Indiana, Denver, and Boston!

Sculptural, blue-green leaves look great all season. Tall, pastel flowers add tropical elegance to the early spring garden.

From the Orange River, where it's been used medicinally for generations.

Cecil Houdyshel

If you've never grown a crinum before, start with Cecil!  This crinum blooms more than any other variety.  It will grow in various soils but does need full sun.  It begins flowering in June and carries on through the fall. We have friends and clients growing this bulb in Zone 6. But please be aware placement and soils are important to cold hardiness. You're a crinum pioneer! Find more info on cold climates and crinum in our book CRINUM Unearthing the History & Culture of the World's Biggest Bulb.

Milk-and-Wine (Crinum x herbertii)

This particular tougher-than-usual plant is one of the most cold-hardy crinums. This is the plant people talk about when they say, "No crinum ever died!" This one has beautiful stripes also.
