Kissing Eryngium

$34.00

Eryngium baldwinii leaves have been used as a breath freshener with aphrodisiac properties.  It’s such a cool and rare plant, it gets horticulturists going without even eating the leaves!

An ethereal, delicate plant that’s easy to grow. This wispy, trailing plant is awesome for swirling around other stout specimens or hanging over the side of a container as a curtain.

I love this as a textured plant. It has sort of two vegetative states — in vigorous growth, it has 3/4 inch wide, flat leaves, but later, it’s just threaded. I has blue flowers — blue enough to be visible even though they are about the size of a pencil lead.

Summer green, the leaves, and vines stay around through winter, so you don’t lose it — they’ll need a trim in the spring.  (see photo)

Like all eryngium, it’s in the carrot family and has a decent tap root. Though it’s from moist spots in the coastal plain, it’s actually drought tolerant. Our cuttings are from botanist Daniel Payne, who collected cuttings from the last remaining wild population in South Carolina.

Extremely rare in cultivation.  We ship well-rooted 4.5-inch plants.
