Crinum oliganthum

A petite cousin of our Crinum americanum, this species used to be called West Indies Mini Crinum. Runs to make a dense summer groundcover in sun or part shade, Mini loves a moist spot. Also makes a nice addition to a mixed pot for a tabletop. Flowers start in July and continue sporadically through fall. Cold hardy in Zone 8 — we don’t have information for farther north. We ship 5″ inch pots, with 2 or 3 mature bulbs — remember unlike other crinum honkers this bulb matures at about the size of your thumb!

These are big, dramatic plants with full heads of pastel flowers, which bloom in April and May. They’re collected from high elevations in Africa and are amazingly cold-hardy.

Cemetery Lily in Medicine, Art, and Memories

Through recent trials, we know one species of crinum lily thrives in unexpected places like the mid-west, high plains of Denver, in Ohio and New York.  Three foot tall pink or white flowers top sculptural gray leaves. You can see the universal quest for life in its robust growth.  Ironically, the same species has long…

Must Have Happy Flower for Fall Seed-in

From mid-march all the way through May everyone who sees any garden I’ve designed wants that cheerful, easy to grow wildflower that I call Moroccan Toadflax.  I like that name since this little plant looks like our native called toadflax, or field flax (there’s an essay about that lovely little wildflower in this book). But…
